RAM 1500 vs. 2500 vs. 3500: 2026 Towing Capacity and Hitch Guide
Camping and boating season is just around the corner in New England and with that in mind, you may be trying to determine which RAM truck can handle your trailer. Most buyers focus on towing capacity and stop there, but payload is just as important.
Our Artioli Chrysler Dodge RAM team put together this guide to help drivers choose the right RAM truck for their needs and make sure it’s properly equipped for safe, confident towing.
Understanding Towing Capacity vs. Payload
Towing capacity is the maximum weight your truck can pull on a trailer. Payload capacity is the maximum weight the truck itself can carry in the cab and bed combined. The catch is that payload includes tongue weight, which is the downward force the trailer puts on your hitch ball.
Tongue weight typically runs 10–15% of total trailer weight, so a 10,000-lb trailer can add 1,000–1,500 lbs to your payload before you’ve loaded a single thing in the bed. A truck that’s within its towing limit can still be over its payload limit, and that’s where handling and braking get compromised.
RAM 1500: Everyday Towing with Comfort
The 1500 is the right truck for drivers who tow occasionally and want a capable, comfortable daily driver.
- Max Towing Capacity: Up to ~12,750 lbs (when properly equipped)
- Best For: Boats, small campers, utility trailers
With available 5.7L HEMI® V8 with eTorque system, the RAM 1500 handles boats, utility trailers, and smaller campers while maintaining a comfortable ride.
Ideal for towing a fishing boat to local lakes, weekend camping trips, and light equipment or landscaping trailers
RAM 2500: Heavy-Duty Confidence
The jump to the 2500 makes sense when you’re towing heavier or more frequently.
- Max Towing Capacity: Up to ~20,000 lbs (diesel equipped)
Best For: Larger campers, enclosed trailers, work equipment
The available 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel, the 2500 handles fifth-wheel campers, horse trailers, and contractor loads that would push a half-ton to its limits. The added payload capacity also gives you more breathing room when the bed isn’t empty.
RAM 3500: Maximum Towing Power
The RAM 3500 is purpose-built to deliver top-tier capability. Available in dual configuration with the high-output Cummins diesel engine, the RAM 3500 is designed for the heaviest recreational and commercial loads.
- Max Towing Capacity: Up to ~37,000 lbs (when properly equipped)
- Best For: Large fifth-wheel trailers, heavy commercial loads
This is the truck for large RVs and fifth-wheel campers, heavy-duty commercial hauling, and equipment transport. If you’re regularly towing over 20,000 lbs, nothing in the RAM lineup gets close to it.
Choosing the Right Hitch
The best hitch for your truck largely depends on what you’re towing. Getting the wrong hitch class for your load creates weight distribution problems that no amount of driving experience will fully compensate for.
Receiver Hitch (Class III–V)
- Most common for boats and utility trailers
- Works with RAM 1500 and some 2500 setups
Fifth-Wheel Hitch
- Mounted in the truck bed
- Ideal for large campers and RVs
- Common with RAM 2500 and 3500
Gooseneck Hitch
- Also bed-mounted
- Often used for agricultural or heavy-duty trailers
Towing Technology
All three trucks come with Trailer Sway Control, an integrated trailer brake controller, and Tow/Haul Mode as part of the towing package. Available 360° camera systems make a real difference on tight boat ramps and campsites, especially if you don’t hitch
